The Living Bridge Co-Learning Centre

Green School Bali

The Living Bridge is a sustainable co-learning centre co-designed and built with the students, parents, and teachers of Green School Bali. Led by Mizzi Studio, the project champions shared authorship, regenerative materials, and intergenerational learning, offering a blueprint for how educational spaces can nurture both people and planet.

I came to Green School because of the climate crisis and because I wanted to be part of something actively shaping a better future for my children. What began as a simple parent request to mentor her son evolved into a two-year regenerative journey that brought together students, educators, professionals, and families. I had the privilege of co-leading a course that empowered students to reimagine not just a space, but the future they want to live in.

At the heart of the Living Bridge is a commitment to sustainability, shared authorship and building in harmony with local knowledge. The redesign responded to the evolving needs of The Bridge, Green School’s on-campus co-learning hub. Co-created with students, teachers and parents, the new space is partially open to the elements, embracing the school’s indoor-outdoor learning ethos.

Construction unfolded alongside the school calendar. Students aged 15 to 18 took part in every stage, from design to build, gaining real-world experience in architecture, materials research and collaborative making. Weekly online sessions led by Jonathan Mizzi helped guide the project through its final stages of construction.

The structure is made from over 300 pieces of locally harvested bamboo shaped with advanced heat-bending techniques developed with Bamboo Pure. The palette also includes lime plaster, ecocrete bricks, crushed-glass terrazzo and banana paper. Mycelium panels were created with the school’s Innovation Hub, while furniture was handmade by students from site waste.

The sweeping roof welcomes visitors into a circular plan designed for talks, workshops and quiet reflection. Arched pillars support interactive platforms and provide acoustically separated spaces for focused work.

The Living Bridge is both space and process. A collective act of stewardship, it represents a blueprint for how educational infrastructure can empower, regenerate and connect.
