Pool Bloom Bar

Pool Bloom is a fluid and dynamic water feature. A canopy poised on a central column, referencing the Rotunda—its historical neighbour in Mosta. Designed as a fluid gesture, it creates a curtain of water that cocoon people underneath, offering shelter, wonder, and calm in Malta’s hot summer months.

Pool Bloom is a contemporary reinterpretation of Malta’s built and natural phenomena. Engineered as a cantilevered monocoque structure, it creates a floating sanctuary. Its curtain of water offers cool and calm in the island’s summer heat. Recessed lighting articulates the canopy’s water edge at night while Fibonacci spirals on its underside echo the Rotunda’s coffers.

The project called for a respectful response to context that could hold heritage, climate, and craft in balance. Pool Bloom’s patinated brass form is both sculpture and shelter, a place for reflection, gathering, and celebration.

Built using composite fabrication with local partners, the piece challenged material norms and reintroduced decorative craft through cutting-edge tools: 5-axis CNC, carbon fibre strengthening, and fluid simulation.

Pool Bloom’s ambition extended beyond design. It seeded research into natural fibre composites and provided a real-world case for low-embodied-carbon architecture in Malta. The client now invites students to experience the space, a legacy that merges science, wonder, and place.
