Colicci Park Cafe, Dulwich Park
The new Colicci Park Café in Dulwich was designed with three main objectives in mind: to celebrate its scenic natural surroundings, to accommodate its growing clientele, and to communicate our client’s use of high quality, natural and locally sourced ingredients.
The design of this stunningly-located café needed to function as a unique USP that elevated Colicci above its competitors. Mizzi Studio created an interior space which not only houses the staff’s growing needs, but provides customers with a user-experience that is lively, contemporary and memorable.
The new café has been established within the historic Refreshment House, which was built in the 1890s – a charming building located near the centre of the park, overlooking the West Lawns. The team’s brief was to create a larger kitchen area, and two extensions in the back of the building to house additional bathrooms and a cold room. Our challenge was to develop an efficient back-of-house with a capacity to cater for the numerous families visiting the park, whilst completely reinvigorating the café’s interiors.
The team’s response was to introduce a mix of texture and colour that would enhance the building’s inherent architectural qualities. The café’s ceilings were punched open, bringing more openness, light and air to the space whilst exposing the building’s authentic wooden rafts. Their earthy vernacular was then carried through to the reclaimed timber wall cladding, whose warm, textural qualities were enriched by the juxtaposition of dark sapphire geometric tiles. The team played up this contrast by creating a cascading tiling composition across the entire café floor.
