Chiswick House School
Jonathan Mizzi has been thrilled to be at the helm of a boundary-breaking education project for Malta, as former Director and continued collaborator of MMP Studios. The proposed scheme is for Chiswick House School – a co-educational establishment on the islands, catering for students between the ages of two and eighteen. Their new building would see the construction of a new primary school with thirty-six classrooms and varied outdoor sport facilities.
The new Chiswick House School premises will be one of the first in Europe to use the innovative pod and open-classroom concept, where children are encouraged to interact with their natural environment rather than being confined to an indoor classroom. Mizzi Studio and MMP’s project proposes more than just a new architectural approach to building schools, but an entire new pedagogical infrastructure. The team have created an environment that benefits from open space – comprising both natural and recreational areas – where children can grow, learn and thrive. Should proposed plans be approved, the school will incorporate a private road that will serve as a drop-off and pick-up area within the site itself, rather than on the adjacent road. Meaning school drop-off and pick-up times won’t cause traffic congestion, and children will enjoy increased safety, away from subsequent road activity. The school grounds will also include a car park for eighty-two vehicles, and studies are being carried out on traffic flows in order to assess how to continue to minimise impact.
